ABSTRACT: This study examines the role of early childhood education (ECE) in teaching empathy among young children, essential for their social and emotional development. The objectives are to (1) assess changes in children's empathy levels and prosocial behaviors in ECE settings, (2) evaluate the influence of empathy education integrated into ECE curricula, and (3) examine the impact of ECE on fostering compassionate attitudes towards others. A survey design is employed to gather data on empathy development and qualitative insights into children's empathetic behaviors. A purposive sample of 130 children from preschools in Ogun State was selected. The case study focuses on preschools known for their empathy teaching initiatives. Findings revealed increased empathy levels, enhanced prosocial behaviors, and positive attitudes towards compassion fostered by ECE participation. Recommendations include integrating empathy education into ECE curricula, modeling empathetic behaviors, and supporting educators in fostering a culture of empathy in early childhood settings.
